Devins Orchards was a family owned and
run farm business, operating for over 90 years!
1921 Dr. Clifford Devins, a prominent doctor in Aurora,
Ontario, purchased 100 acres in Whitchurch township. His
young wife, Audrey Mabelle, also a doctor, wondered what
her husband wanted with property so far away from town!
You have to remember in those days, horse and buggy were
still being used.
Clifford was raised in Collingwood, Ontario
and wanted to have an apple orchard similar to the ones
that still proliferate the Collingwood/Georgian Bay/Thornbury
Dr Devins planted grasses, potatoes,
etc, in the first year or two, pastured sheep and even
managed close to 400 bee hives. Once the soil was stabilized
he planted the first apple trees, some of which are still
Devins Orchards evolved over the
years from a wholesale orchard, providing fresh apples
to the local fruit markets in Aurora, Newmarket and Stouffville,
to a pick your own farm/market with over a dozen varieties,
some old favourites and some just a few years on the scene.
After four generations of family involvement the time had come to close this chapter in the Devins history book and so the farm was sold in 2013. The future may see a new version of Devins Orchards open once more to the public.
